We all have lofts, garages and spare rooms filled with items that might only be used a couple of times a year, but that we can’t do without on those occasions. A BBQ, garden furniture and paddling pool may be waiting in the wings, as we remain hopeful of a reliable spell of summer weather. We might own items of furniture, antiques or other sentimental treasures that we couldn’t possibly part with or have bikes, kayaks and climbing gear that come out nearly every weekend.

The challenge is storage. Our garages are typically too full for us to fit our cars in, so they sit out on the drive or road, at a higher risk of damage and with a greater annual insurance premium. Our spare room is so full that it takes considerable upheaval to clear the space for guests. Our loft is so packed that in all honesty, we have no idea what’s up there.

A major reason for moving house is a feeling that we’ve run out of space. Yet the time, costs and upheaval involved in moving are extensive. Before you instruct an estate agent, it might be worth taking a step back and considering whether self-storage could offer a better solution.

The Self-Storage Solution

The 2016 report relating to the annual Self Storage Industry survey was released at the end of May. It states that around half of the UK population feel that they have nothing to put in self-storage, yet many of us can identify with overly cluttered spaces in our homes.

Self-storage units come in a variety of sizes, from small units that might simply hold a few boxes, to units which could house a Campervan or a collection of bulky furniture. They aren’t just for people who need to put things in storage whilst the travel or work abroad for a year, they can be a valid solution for any household.

Self-storage units are kept clean and dry, unlike items that you might choose to store in the shed! They are securely locked, with CCTV cameras and restricted site entry for further protection. No one else will have access to your possessions, but on most self-storage sites, you can gain entry as and when you need to, 24 hours a day.

Pull up outside, load your boot and roof rack with outdoor gear and head off for adventures. See a sunny forecast and pop around to pick up your BBQ or camping gear or drop buy in December to collect your Christmas tree, decorations and Santa suit!

Ecommerce Stock Driving Demand

The industry report shows a 5% increase in available space in the past year, with the UK having the highest concentration of storage facilities in Europe. A rise in small scale e-commerce businesses, run from home, is one factor that is driving an increase in demand for these facilities. Having a place to keep stock and plenty of room to collect together, packaging and despatch orders can quickly extend beyond the spare room dimensions. A well organised self-storage space, with shelving and a table, laid out with everything you need, can make this an efficient process.
