How to Choose the Right Container Size for Your Business

Get the size wrong on a site container and you’ll know about it fast. You’ll either be climbing over stacked materials to reach a digger, or you’ll have paid for several extra metres of steel that never get filled. For construction managers, site managers, and anyone overseeing storage at a school, lab, or industrial site, choosing the right container size isn’t just about saving money. It directly affects how safe and how organised your site actually is. Two issues come up again and again with the wrong size: site safety, when there’s nowhere proper to put things away, and project management, when nobody can find what they need when they need it.
How Do You Know You’ve Got the Right Container Size?
There’s a simple way to think about it: work backwards from what’s going in, not forwards from what looks impressive. List the equipment, stock or materials you need to store, factor in how often people need access, and add a realistic margin for growth or seasonal stock. Get those three things right, and the right container size for your business usually becomes pretty obvious.
Container Sizes at a Glance
Most UK suppliers, including us, work across a similar range of standard sizes:
- 6ft–9ft containers. Best for light tool storage, small site offices, or short-term domestic use, where access is intermittent and the footprint needs to stay small.
- 10ft containers. A proper site tool store or compact workshop, while still fitting into tight or restricted spaces.
- 20ft containers. The most popular size for a reason. It’s roughly the footprint of a parking space and they hold a genuinely useful amount of equipment, stock or materials without eating up half your site.
- 20ft office containers. Swap storage for working space, kitted out as a site office, welfare unit or meeting room.
- 40ft high cube containers. Close to double the floor area of a 20ft, plus extra headroom. This is the obvious choice if you’re storing for multiple trades or a long-running project.
These dimensions follow the ISO 668 standard, so a 20ft container from one supplier should match a 20ft container from another almost exactly. That consistency makes it easier to plan layouts and access routes in advance, rather than working it out once the container is already on site.
Choosing a Site Container for Construction and Industrial Sites
On a construction or industrial site, the wrong-sized container creates its own hazards. Too small, and tools end up stacked outside or balanced precariously, creating trip hazards and making it harder to find what you need quickly. Too large, and you’ve used up valuable site footprint that could have gone towards welfare facilities, parking, or access routes. Getting the size right makes day-to-day safety and project management much easier because everything has a place, deliveries are easier to plan around, and handovers between trades don’t mean digging through someone else’s clutter to find your own kit.
A good rule of thumb is, if you’re regularly leaving materials outside because the container’s full, then size up before your next delivery rather than after an incident report.
Container for Hire or Container for Sale: Which Makes Sense?
Once you’ve decided on a size, the next decision is whether to hire or buy. Hiring a container suits short or fixed-length projects, seasonal storage, or anywhere you need flexibility to scale up or down as the job progresses. Buying one outright tends to make more sense for permanent sites, ongoing storage needs, or settings like schools and labs where the same secure space will be needed year after year. A six-month groundworks contract, for example, rarely justifies the cost of a new container, whereas a permanent stores area on an industrial site usually does. Either way, it’s worth getting a quote for both options before committing, as the cost difference over a longer project is sometimes actually smaller than people expect.
Getting the Size Right for Education, Science and Pharma Settings
Schools, colleges, and science or pharma facilities have slightly different priorities again. Secure, lockable storage for equipment, stock, or sensitive materials matters more than raw floor space, and a smaller, well-organised container often works better than a bigger one that’s only half full. A 10ft or 20ft container is often plenty for departmental stock or seasonal equipment, so you’re not paying for more space than you actually need. If your setting has specific storage, access or compliance requirements, it’s worth talking those through directly with your supplier before choosing a size, rather than guessing from a size chart alone.
