10 incredible container homes to give you inspiration

Container homes

County Derry, Grand Designs, Ireland

Many of us living in the UK will have seen the Grand Designs programme that aired in September 2014. Housebuilder Patrick Bradley wanted to create something unique on his parents’ land and, after searching for materials, decided to use shipping containers, creating the ultimate of container homes.

Using two units stacked vertically, Patrick has created a tranquil space that blends in with the natural backdrop of the land, and the 115sqm of space gives Patrick the freedom and comfort he was searching for.

Sea Container Homes, DC

Clever and unusual use of containers form the Sea Container Housing in Washington, D.C. Many containers have been put together to develop a student dormitory to house 24 students.

A seemingly simple structure forms a rectangle, with bedrooms on either end facing into a large communal area that includes a kitchen, living and dining space.

The bedrooms are simply designed with wood-clad walls and floors, but the bright, airy windows give a great view of the surrounding area. The entire build only took seven months to complete.

Stow Away, Waterloo

if you are looking for an eco-friendly hotel in the centre of London, you may wish to try Stow Away, Aparthotel. Each room has been designed to be a self-contained studio apartment, negating the need for large receptions and dining rooms.

Bookings are flexible, and you even have a small space to make something to eat if you prefer to have a quiet night rather than mix with the busy London nightlife. Air conditioning, wifi and solar panels are fitted to this container homes hotel, making it truly sustainable.

Dramatic and Unique, Missouri

This domestic home built in 2011 is a unique and eye catching design. Designed and built by homeowners Zack and Brie Smithey, they have poured their heart and soul into this creation. The home is hard to miss with eye-catching blue and white vertical stripes that make up the outside of the house.

Eight containers were used to create the space they were looking for, and each section has been lovingly decorated with a unique sense of style. Just because they built their home with containers doesn’t mean they skimped on style and luxury!

Boho living, Ohio

The Boho Box Hop is an Airbnb property, so it’s available to anyone who wants to try container living. Nestled in Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio, this container home gives meaning to comfortable compact living.

Being inside the state park gives you access to beautiful views and great walks and trails so you can learn more about the area. The two shipping containers provide enough space for four people to sleep and live comfortably during their stay.

Boulder Container Homes, Colorado

Recently sold in 2020 for over $3 million, this home is truly a marvel of design and functionality. With over 4000sq ft of space with four bedrooms and bathrooms, beautiful views wherever you look of the Red Rocks, Foothills and Downtown Boulder.

Natural light is not lacking in this container home and has a great variety of indoor and outdoor living spaces. However, one of the favourite parts of the house has to be the incredible outdoor kitchen that looks out onto the distant mountains.

Manifesto House, Chile

Possibly one of the most environmentally friendly homes in the world, the Manifesto house was built entirely of recycled materials, and its shutters open and close to filter air and control the light.

The overarching, enclosed balcony provides uninterrupted views of the surrounding countryside, and the designers haven’t shied away from using the corrugated interior of the containers as a decorative piece within the home. The home is bright and airy, with over 1722sqm of space.

Devils Corner, Australia

A project with a difference. Devils Corner is a winery based in Tasmania, Australia. Designed and built by Australian Architectural firm Culumus, this unique winery has many aspects to its build.

A tasting room where the wines are tried, a lookout tower to spot the scenery, and guided winery tours are just a few of Devils Corner’s offerings. If you would like to sit and watch the world go by surrounded by good food and even better wine, this may be the container homes trip you need to plan.

Seven Havens, Indonesia

The Seven Havens is a luxury hotel built on a hillside in Lombok. Overlooking rice fields, the ocean and the hillside, this hotel has a view for everyone.

Containers were used alongside recycled wood and soil to create the base and structures we see today. If you want to book a space in this beautiful setting, you will have to be quick. With only four rooms available for rent and a three-bedroom villa, availability is hard to come by!

Quadrum Ski and Yoga Resort, Georgia

This Ski and Yoga resort based in Georgia features several shipping containers stacked together and clad in wood panelling. A beautiful backdrop of the Caucasus Mountains is the ultimate USP for this resort, and thanks to the wood cladding, the hotel is a lovely contrast to its natural surroundings.

The average room size is 22sqm, and all rooms have a view of the mountain, with some boasting balconies. This hotel was built with the environment in mind, so all materials are environmentally friendly, and the landscape has not been damaged.
