What is an open-top shipping container?

An open-top container has a removable tarpaulin roof rather than a fixed steel top, allowing oversized cargo to be loaded from above using a crane. Open-top containers are available in 20ft and 40ft sizes and are used for heavy machinery, timber, and other goods that exceed the height of a standard container opening.
