How do shipping container sizes affect shipping costs?

Shipping costs are calculated primarily on the basis of container type (20ft or 40ft), the trade lane, and current freight market rates. A 40ft container does not cost twice as much as a 20ft on most routes — typically 40ft rates are between 1.3 and 1.7 times the 20ft rate, making larger containers more cost-efficient per cubic metre of cargo.
